Arkansas is a southern state that borders the Mississippi River. It is the 33rd most populous state in the nation with a population of about 3 million. Perhaps what Arkansas is most known for nowadays is that it was the birthplace of Wal-Mart. In 1962, businessman Sam Walton founded the first Wal-Mart in Arkansas. Wal-Mart has gone on to become the largest retail chain in the entire world and is featured in nearly every community in the United States.
One of the other more notable things about Arkansas is its unique geographic and geological features. The state has many caves, hot springs, and mines that are popular places for both residents and tourists to visit. Geologists have considered Arkansas – along with Brazil – as one of the places that offers the highest quality of quartz crystals in the entire world. The city of Murfreesboro maintains a diamond mine that also serves as a tourist attraction.
Arkansas is right in the middle of the pack when it comes to horse population with approximately 168,000 horses. However, Arkansas actually features the 2nd most horses per person in the eastern half of the United States, trailing only Kentucky. Part of the reason why horses are so popular in Arkansas is because of the aforementioned unique and beautiful scenery. The state features many scenic hiking and horseback riding trails that are perfect for those interested in exploring the state with their horse companion.
