Horse Farms For Sale in South Carolina

img

Admittedly, the Palmetto state’s “street cred” in the equestrian community seems underwhelming on the surface. Yet just like a brushing a stallion brings out a beautiful shine, a closer inspection of the Palmetto state’s “horse power” shows it’s got a rather significant pedigree. Top jockeys, trainers and owners have originated from here. The Aiken area is known for its thoroughbred pastures. And South Carolina is one 10 states with an official horse, the Carolina Marsh Tacky.

The Lowcountry, too, has a long history with riding, breeding and racing. And while hardly center ring today, it remains on the periphery of the horse world.

In many cases, the horse farms aren’t that far from cities and suburbs.

South Carolina is located in southeast United States. Three geographic regions cover the state. The Atlantic Coastal Plain (or the South Carolina Low Country) extends west from the Atlantic Ocean. The Atlantic Coastal Plains are swampy, flat and marked by rivers near the coast. The Coastal Plains are forested and lined with sandy hills as you move inland. The higher elevations and rolling hills of the Piedmont are located northwest of the Atlantic Coastal Plain. The more low lying Blue Ridge Mountains cross northwest South Carolina with elevations reaching 3,000 ft.

South Carolina's economy is historically based on agriculture. Tobacco, poultry, cattle, dairy, soybeans and hogs are important agricultural products. Growth of the textile industry met an ill fate in the 1920s with the appearance of the boll weevil--sending many African Americans north in search of work. Textile and clothing industries are based in Piedmont and continue to be an important industry to the state, along with chemical products, paper products, machinery and tourism.

Estancia Wiggins

Ehrhardt, Bamberg County, South Carolina

Where land, legacy, and lifestyle converge. From it's inception as a polo pony training facility to now, this incredible retreat was born from a deep-seated love of horses and the natural world. Serving as a cherished seasonal refuge, offering a secluded escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, this elegant property is now available. Discover the tranquil retreat of Estancia Wiggins, a sprawling sporting estate situated in the serene Lowcountry hamlet of Ehrhardt, South Carolina. The harmonious blend of old-world tradition with modern conveniences reflects the owner's passion for the design and architecture of Argentina. All structures on Estancia Wiggins follow the pure Argentine motif, with the main residence drawing from both the early 19th century as well as the late colonial style found in the pampas. Standing proudly amid 83 +/- acres, this property offers many opportunities for the sporting equestrian to indulge their passions. Polo, jumping, dressage, combined driving or any Western discipline will be effortless here. Local tradition mandates that farms remain in family ownership, regardless of economic circumstances; thus, the area has remained unchanged for over 100 years and is mostly likely to continue. This open land, the plantation pines, creeks, and natural woodlands have allowed for all equine pursuits, such as fox hunting, beagling, and cross country. There is also an assortment of sporting clay disciplines, consistent with the Lowcountry shooting tradition: driven pheasant, woodcock in a woodland setting, certified skeet field, non-regulation trap, and, most unusual, a pigeon ring. The exquisite home is a testament to the owners unwavering dedication to authentic Argentine design. Every detail has been meticulously curated, from the imported tile floors to the seamless blend of antique and modern furnishings. Whether hosting a grand soire or seeking a tranquil evening next to one of your four fireplaces, this home balances sophistication with comfort, making it the ultimate destination for luxurious living. No expense was spared in construction or design. The custom cabinetry was skillfully crafted by local artisans, while the rafters and mantles were carefully selected and imported from afar. Meticulous attention to detail is evident in every corner of the house. Cultivated and natural landscaping surrounds the Estancia, offering sweeping views for your viewing and riding pleasure. Seven four-board fenced paddocks, each equipped with Ritchie automatic waterers, are located on the property. For training days, a round pen and multiple ideal areas for schooling await you including a full stick and ball field. Among the numerous outbuildings are the owner's tack room, complete with a luxurious kitchenette, a six-stall rustic Argentine-style polo barn, and a five-run kennel that once housed the owner's private pack of fox hounds. The next jewel in the crown of this property is the main barn. Again, echoes of Argentina are woven into its design, along with craftsmanship that pays homage to the property's locale. Custom-milled cypress and stall fronts blend seamlessly into the stucco design, with four 12 x 12 stalls. The tack room of the main barn is built from heart pine and cypress wood, salvaged from the old Smith House that once stood on this property, and has custom-built bookshelves for all your reference material. On the property sits the current owners art studio. The painter and sculptor has spent countless hours in this refurbished cookhouse, dreaming up and creating some of the works that that dot the property. Nestled in a far corner of the property is the Estancia Wiggins dancehall. Originally created to host outdoor parties or luncheons as guests took aim on the shooting course, modelled after one of Sea Island Resorts prestigious skeet courses, this versatile building is ready and waiting for your personal touches. Estancia Wiggins also has charming, peaceful abode fondly titled Fender Cottage. This cottage, original to the property, has been lovingly restored to retain its Old South feel. It boasts a sitting room, a quaint kitchen, two bedrooms, and a well-appointed bathroom, making it an ideal retreat for guests. There are still others, including a caretakers cottage and private chapel. The current owners have poured their hearts into this property and hope that the next steward of this land will appreciate its rich history and legacy of equestrianism and sporting lifestyle. This idyllic setting is a true haven for anyone who loves the outdoors and the lifestyle it offers.
